In Fall 2018, I applied for and received a $10,000 Wicked Cool Places grant from the New Bedford Economic Development Council (NBEDC) to develop and implement lighting solutions for Wings Court, an outdoor park space in New Bedford. I incorporated the project into my IAD218 Lighting Design class curriculum at UMass Dartmouth as a service-learning project. Students were paired with lighting design professionals to come up with solutions and specify lighting for various parts of Wings Court. They presented their ideas to representatives from NBEDC and the New Bedford City Planning office, as well as other city representatives. The students' ideas were well received, and in Summer 2019, I assisted the City Planning office with finalizing and ordering the lighting for the park. The lighting was then installed and unveiled in Fall 2019. I was so pleased to be a part of the revitalization of this space, considered a great improvement to Wings Court.
