Project: Smithsonian Castle Store
Year Completed: 2013
Project Description:
Senior leadership at the Smithsonian Institution wanted to renovate the Great Hall of the Smithsonian Castle building, which serves as the visitor information center and iconic building for the entire Institution. A new retail store was designed for the space, keeping some historical elements in the design, while incorporating a fresh and contemporary look. The project required detailed custom millwork because it is a free-standing store that must be both mobile and lockable, to be stored during special events. The final design enhances the architecture of the Castle building, provides excellent visitor flow, and supports the diverse merchandise mix.
My Roles & Responsibilities:
I designed all of custom millwork for the project, selecting finishes and creating detailed shop drawings. I presented all ideas and plans to senior leadership and coordinated the construction and installation of the project.
